Alberta Obituaries 05/15/2011

Ayer III, John

AYER, John Carleton III July 3, 1925 - May 6, 2011 Autodidact, Visionary John Ayer was born in Banff, Alberta. He grew up in cities across Canada with his parents, John and Alice, and his brother, Donald. John was a student at St. Mary's High School, where he met his sweetheart, Noreen McCullough. They were to have a lifetime of love and friendship. During World War Two, John served in the Navy aboard HMCS Micmac at Halifax. After the war, John and Noreen were married. They had four children. John managed Alberta Tire in downtown Calgary, and was active in civic life. Largely a self-taught man, and a prodigious reader, he loved to think and talk with others, contemplating the world. From 1966 to 1977, John was an alderman on city council. It was a time of great change in this city. He led a committee of citizens whose goal was to recover the birthplace of Calgary - the site of the original NWMP Fort that was built at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. This was an ancient place where First Nations people had been coming for millennia, but it had been buried and forgotten, and there were plans to build a freeway. John wrote hundreds of letters to people in companies that owned or leased land on the site, as well as to people at all levels of government. His persistence and fortitude came to fruition. In 1974, the City of Calgary bought the site in time for the centennial year of the fort's founding. "If you know where youve been and where you are," he said, "youve a good chance of figuring out where you are going." In recognition of John's accomplishments, he was the recipient of various honours, including: City of Calgary Heritage Award, Western Heritage Award from the Calgary Stampede, Honorary member of the RCMP Veterans Association, the Heritage Park Historical Society, and the Fort Calgary Preservation Society. John's family and friends were inspired by his vision and integrity. He was a humble man who had respect for every soul he met. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a contagious laugh. John was predeceased by Noreen; his parents; his brother, Don; extended family members, Ernest, Dorothea, and Danny McCullough, Susanne Shannon, Robert, Ellen and Mary Ayer. He is survived by his children, John IV (Elizabeth) Ayer, Andrea Ayer (Garth Racher), Paul (Diana) Ayer, and Mary Ellen (Jim) Pollock; grandchildren Paula Ayer (Shaker Paleja), John Carl V, Paul, and Alex Ayer, and Aaron and Sally Pollock; great-granddaughter Sulekha Noreen Paleja; extended family members Ernie and Sue McCullough, Barbara McCullough, Shelley McCullough, Mel Shannon, Colleen McKenna and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Andrea Ayer for her many years of caring for John. Thanks also to Tessie Gascon, Lindi Rempel, Dr. Vivian Ewa, and the wonderful staff at the Colonel Belcher. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 - 85 Street S.W.) on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rev. Julian Studden, Presider. Cain, Carl

CAIN, Carl January 11, 1923 - May 8, 2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Carl L. Cain on Sunday, May 8, 2011, after a brief illness, at the age of 88 years. Born in Mansfield, Ohio and raised in Los Angeles, Carl resided in Maplewood, Minnesota at the time of his passing. He leaves four children: Curt Cain (Bev), Christine Pfister, Mark Cain (Sally), and Leigh Mott (Dave); eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, with another soon to arrive. He was predeceased by his wife, Lottie, in 2004 after fifty-five years of marriage. Carl joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and attained the rank of Aviation Electronics Technician Mate before being advanced to Officers' Candidate School until the war's end. Upon leaving the service, he joined Western Geophysical, working in the Philippines, the Western U.S., and Northern Alberta. It was in Athabasca that he met Lottie Lois Bryan, marrying her in June of 1949. In subsequent years, Carl advanced in the oil industry and joined Standard Oil of Indiana's Canadian operation, which would become Amoco Canada Petroleum, where he was first responsible for exploration in Western Canada, a time during which was a key figure in the discovery of one of the largest natural gas reserves ever found in the region. In 1977, he became president of Amoco Trinidad, and, in 1981, president of Amoco UK. From his base in London, England, he was responsible for Amoco's exploration activities in regions encompassing more than half the globe. He retired in 1984, relocating to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, WA, an area he highly favoured and where his final rest will be. He was a thoughtful, introspective, and unassuming man who shunned "pomp and circumstance," yet his character left a favorable and lasting impression on many of those he met. A loving husband, and a tremendous father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Carl will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of St. John's Hospital of Maplewood, Minnesota, as well as the hospice and health care attendants who provided excellent care in his home during his last weeks. The family especially thanks Mark and Sally for their compassion and care of Dad on behalf of us all. If friends so desire, memorial tributes can be made directly to their charities of choice; however, organizations dedicated to finding a cure for Alzheimer's Disease (which took Carl's beloved Lottie in 2004) or those supporting animal welfare would be especially appreciated. Condolences can be emailed to cainfamily1949@gmail.com or to 2759 Signal Hill Drive S.W., Calgary, AB T3H 2L7.

Lockridge, James

LOCKRIDGE, James "Jim" Francis September 4, 1938 - May 13, 2011 It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of James "Jim" Francis Lockridge, beloved husband of Marilyn of Calgary, on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the age of 72 years. Jim was a proud military man and served thirty-five years in the Canadian Air Force, retiring in 1990 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer at the Canadian Forces Headquarters in Ottawa. Travelling the country and the world with his job he and Marilyn created a wealth of great friendships. Later in life, when those friends lived miles away, their friendships were easily rekindled with a quick "drop in" visit to catch up on old times. Jim was an avid athlete, excelling as both a hockey and softball player throughout his youth and adult life. As his hockey legs wore out he begrudgingly gave up the game he loved and picked up his newest athletic passion cycling, and could be found daily riding his bike along the bike paths of Calgary. His passion for sports was handed down to his children and grandchildren as he was an avid coach and organizer of youth sports and an enthusiastic supporter of his children and grandchildrens sporting pursuits. He so wanted to see his beloved Leafs win just one more Cup. Go Leafs Go! Jim and Marilyn enjoyed many happy years of retirement together. They filled their time with travelling the world, visiting friends and family, playing golf and checking items off their bucket list. Just recently Jim and Marilyn enjoyed a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon on what would be there last trip home together from their retirement property in Arizona. Besides his loving wife and companion of fifty-four years, Marilyn, Jim is survived by his four children, Tim (Michelle), Leslie (Scott), Mark (Bernadette) and Brent (Karen); six grandchildren, Katelyn, Marc, Clayton, Darcy, Palmer and Claire; as well as sisters, Helen (Roger), Lois (Garth) and Shirley (Hugh). Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through, . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association, No. 204, 2323 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3 (Telephone 403-266-0620, ext. 112,, ). Lovell, Joy

LOVELL, Joy (Ostrom) July 7, 1929 - May 8, 2011 Joy Lovell (Ostrom) of High River, formerly of Okotoks, passed away on May 8, 2011. She is survived by her son Jeff Lovell (Roxanna), daughter Susan Lovell-Stafford (Monty) and son Brad Lovell. Also surviving her are her grandchildren Michael Rowland, Lindsay Rowland-Brann, Chris Lovell, Jon Lovell, Tahler Lovell and Chanse Lovell as well as two step-granddaughters Nicole Stafford and Jessica Stafford, great-grandchildren Lane Brann, Colton Brann, Cody Rowland, Ethan Rowland and Dakota Stafford-Gibboney along with her brothers Bill Ostrom (Audry), Lawrence Simmons (Doreen), sister Darlene Simmons and numerous nieces and nephews. Joy was predeceased by her husband Vic Lovell, mother Florence Simmons, sisters Dorothy Ostrom and Irene McKinnon and brother Clarence Simmons, nephew Cecil Ostrom and niece Joan Ostrom. Born and raised in the Springbank area, Joy's love of the mountains and horses carried on through her life. She was happy to share this love with her children and grandchildren. She takes with her an incredible wealth of knowledge about early Alberta history and we will miss the stories she so lovingly shared. Of self-proclaimed, hearty Alberta stock, she proved throughout her life that a "frontier" girl could weather the harsh Alberta winters yet have a deep appreciation for fashion and brightly colored nail polish. Recycling before it was trendy, being a part of the sandwich generation before it had a name; Joy never forgot how important is was to spend that extra moment putting a band-aid on a finger or mending a skinned knee while working all those years at Percy Pegler School in Okotoks. Early country music was a passion of Joy's and to the end she could name any Wilf Carter or Jimmy Rogers tune from memory. She played guitar and piano and her yodelling ability won her a radio contest where she had the opportunity to put her beautiful voice on vinyl. Equally important was her passion for painting and the arts. After Vic's passing in 1999 Joy's health began to fail but still she continued to put others before herself, appreciating her family, her friends and the world around her. Truly an original soul she allowed herself to be guided by a pure heart and a rare ability to see the beauty in the simplest of things. Thanks Mom - We will miss you. A Celebration of Joy's Life will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. To email expressions of sympathy: mountainview@arbormemorial.com Subject heading: Joy Lovell. Arrangements entrusted to MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME and CEMETERY, 1605 - 100 Street S.E. (17 Avenue S.E. at Garden Road), Calgary, AB, T1X 0L4. Telephone: 403-272-5555.

Margach, Ella

MARGACH, Ella Elizabeth (nee: Barker) July 3, 1920 - May 12, 2011 Ella Elizabeth Margach passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the age of 90 years. Ella was born July 3, 1920 in Calgary to Donald and Elizabeth Barker. Ella grew up in the Sunnyside and Hillhurst districts of Calgary and graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 1938. Following graduation Ella took a business course and worked for an insurance company and then at MD13 during the war. Recreationally Ella enjoyed cycling and was an award winning target shooter. In 1947 Ella married Bill Margach and together they raised four sons living first in Bankview and since 1952 in Parkdale. While her boys were young and Bill was on the road, Ella maintained order on the home front. Ella read endless stories to the boys, worked with them on their school work, taught them how to darn their hockey socks and helped them succeed in their many activities. There seemed to be a never ending number of bake sales, father and son banquets and requests for creating Halloween costumes or repairing torn blue jeans or teaching Sunday school, but Ella never seemed to tire or despair. She claimed that helping to raise two younger brothers prepared her for sons of her own. O'Neill , Emmett

O'NEILL, Emmett Denis June 7, 1937 - May 11, 2011 It is with heavy hearts that we are announcing Emmett's passing after a short but valiant effort against cancer. During his 73 years, Emmett was a son, brother, husband, dad, friend, and a role he especially cherished, grandfather. Family was first and foremost to him. He will be missed dearly by his wife of 51 years Bobbi, his son Jay (Lana) and daughter Brenda. Missing their grandpa and his corny jokes, bad one-liners and good-hearted teases will be Ryan and Haley O'Neill, Alyssa and Sarah Posey. Emmett's love for family was equalled by his love of sports, especially golf and curling. He followed his favorite teams, the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Yankees and cheering for ABC - anybody but Calgary! But no team could match his life-long devotion to the Edmonton Eskimos. Emmett was predeceased by his dad James, mom Edith and brother Bernard. Our sincere thanks to the staff at the Grey Nuns and Fort Saskatchewan Hospitals. A special thanks to Dr. Trent Dusang and his staff for helping Emmett during his time at home. Emmett's life will be celebrated with a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Emmett's name to a cancer charity of their choice. To send condolences, please visit, .
