Alberta Obituaries 05/14/2011

AYER III, John Carleton

AYER, John Carleton III July 3, 1925 - May 6, 2011 Autodidact, Visionary John Ayer was born in Banff, Alberta. He grew up in cities across Canada with his parents, John and Alice, and his brother, Donald. John was a student at St. Mary's High School, where he met his sweetheart, Noreen McCullough. They were to have a lifetime of love and friendship. During World War Two, John served in the Navy aboard HMCS Micmac at Halifax. After the war, John and Noreen were married. They had four children. John managed Alberta Tire in downtown Calgary, and was active in civic life. Largely a self-taught man, and a prodigious reader, he loved to think and talk with others, contemplating the world. From 1966 to 1977, John was an alderman on city council. It was a time of great change in this city. He led a committee of citizens whose goal was to recover the birthplace of Calgary - the site of the original NWMP Fort that was built at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. This was an ancient place where First Nations people had been coming for millennia, but it had been buried and forgotten, and there were plans to build a freeway. John wrote hundreds of letters to people in companies that owned or leased land on the site, as well as to people at all levels of government. His persistence and fortitude came to fruition. In 1974, the City of Calgary bought the site in time for the centennial year of the fort's founding. "If you know where you've been and where you are," he said, "you've a good chance of figuring out where you are going." In recognition of John's accomplishments, he was the recipient of various honours, including: City of Calgary Heritage Award, Western Heritage Award from the Calgary Stampede, Honorary member of the RCMP Veterans Association, the Heritage Park Historical Society, and the Fort Calgary Preservation Society. John's family and friends were inspired by his vision and integrity. He was a humble man who had respect for every soul he met. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a contagious laugh. John was predeceased by Noreen; his parents; his brother, Don; extended family members, Ernest, Dorothea, and Danny McCullough, Susanne Shannon, Robert, Ellen and Mary Ayer. He is survived by his children, John IV (Elizabeth) Ayer, Andrea Ayer (Garth Racher), Paul (Diana) Ayer, and Mary Ellen (Jim) Pollock; grandchildren Paula Ayer (Shaker Paleja), John Carl V, Paul, and Alex Ayer, and Aaron and Sally Pollock; great-granddaughter Sulekha Noreen Paleja; extended family members Ernie and Sue McCullough, Barbara McCullough, Shelley McCullough, Mel Shannon, Colleen McKenna and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Andrea Ayer for her many years of caring for John. Thanks also to Tessie Gascon, Lindi Rempel, Dr. Vivian Ewa, and the wonderful staff at the Colonel Belcher. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 - 85 Street S.W.) on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with The Rev. Julian Studden, Presider. Griffin, Ken

GRIFFIN, Ken It is with profound sadness that the Griffin family announces the passing of Ken Griffin, age 58, at Foothills Hospital where he was surrounded by loved ones. Ken fought a courageous battle against cancer and will be remembered for his deep enthusiasm for life, his commitment to his family, his passion for music and painting, and, above all, his love for Jesus Christ his personal Lord and Saviour. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Annelore, two daughters Laurie and Jessica, and son Joel; his parents Fred and Margaret and his six brothers and sisters: Cathy, Barbara, John, Bev, Dave and Bob. Ken was born and raised in Victoria, B.C. where he eventually met the love of his life, Annelore. They both moved to Alberta - first Edmonton where they began their family and then Calgary where Ken enjoyed his career as a systems analyst, working for many years at Enersul. On his spare time, Ken loved playing drums with his band, Paradigm Shift, and was a prolific painter. Before his illness took over, he spent many evenings and weekends feeding and praying for the homeless at the Street Church in downtown Calgary. A celebration of Ken's life will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. The Griffin family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Palliative Care Unit 47 at Foothills Hospital, for their care and compassion. HOVAN, Helen (Nellie) October 28, 1924 - May 11, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Helen Hovan on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, in Edmonton, at the tender age of 86. Helen's interests were her family, music, watching and playing sports and gardening. She so enjoyed playing her electric organ as well as the piano. She enjoyed time in her garden and loved being outside on a warm sunny day working with her plants and vegetables. She was a devout Christian and had a close relationship with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and never wavered from her strong Christian beliefs. She had a very generous nature and supported many Christian charities. She had a thirst for knowledge and was always looking at finding ways to raise her understanding of the world around her. Helen grew up on a farm in High River, and after graduating from radio school and while she attended school in Vancouver, she met Walter. She worked for Trans Canada Airlines as a radio operator and then after the war she married Walter and moved back to Alberta. She later worked as a secretary for the Federal Government for twenty-five years until she retired. She was loved and will be dearly missed by all of us. Helen is survived by her daughters: Shirley Mah Ming and Geraldine Meletzki; her sons: Tony, Alwyn and Daniel; her eight grandchildren: David, Robert, Kim, Jocelyn, Brodie, Chris, Noella and Camile; and her six great-grandchildren; and her brother John (Anna). Lovell, Joy

LOVELL, Joy (Ostrom) July 7, 1929 - May 8, 2011 Joy Lovell (Ostrom) of High River, formerly of Okotoks, passed away on May 8, 2011. She is survived by her son Jeff Lovell (Roxanna), daughter Susan Lovell-Stafford (Monty) and son Brad Lovell. Also surviving her are her grandchildren Michael Rowland, Lindsay Rowland-Brann, Chris Lovell, Jon Lovell, Tahler Lovell and Chanse Lovell as well as two step-granddaughters Nicole Stafford and Jessica Stafford, great-grandchildren Lane Brann, Colton Brann, Cody Rowland, Ethan Rowland and Dakota Stafford-Gibboney along with her brothers Bill Ostrom (Audry), Lawrence Simmons (Doreen), sister Darlene Simmons and numerous nieces and nephews. Joy was predeceased by her husband Vic Lovell, mother Florence Simmons, sisters Dorothy Ostrom and Irene McKinnon and brother Clarence Simmons, nephew Cecil Ostrom and niece Joan Ostrom. Born and raised in the Springbank area, Joy's love of the mountains and horses carried on through her life. She was happy to share this love with her children and grandchildren. She takes with her an incredible wealth of knowledge about early Alberta history and we will miss the stories she so lovingly shared. Of self-proclaimed, hearty Alberta stock, she proved throughout her life that a "frontier" girl could weather the harsh Alberta winters yet have a deep appreciation for fashion and brightly colored nail polish. Recycling before it was trendy, being a part of the sandwich generation before it had a name; Joy never forgot how important is was to spend that extra moment putting a band-aid on a finger or mending a skinned knee while working all those years at Percy Pegler School in Okotoks. Early country music was a passion of Joy's and to the end she could name any Wilf Carter or Jimmy Rogers tune from memory. She played guitar and piano and her yodelling ability won her a radio contest where she had the opportunity to put her beautiful voice on vinyl. Equally important was her passion for painting and the arts. After Vic's passing in 1999 Joy's health began to fail but still she continued to put others before herself, appreciating her family, her friends and the world around her. Truly an original soul she allowed herself to be guided by a pure heart and a rare ability to see the beauty in the simplest of things. Thanks Mom - We will miss you. Shalkowsky, Alice

SHALKOWSKY, Alice Barbara (nee Krzyz) December 1, 1916 - May 4, 2011 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alice Barbara Shalkowsky surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the age of 94 years. Alice was born in Poland and left in 1944 (during the war) with her two young sons, William and Cristian, fleeing to the safety of Denmark. As a single mom, Alice immigrated to Canada in 1948 and lived in Alberta and Ontario for a brief time until settling in Winnipeg, MB in 1950. In 1952, Alice gave birth to a daughter, Jennifer, a new sister for Bill (William). Alice worked hard and raised her son and daughter as a single mom. Although Alice worked in Poland at a government job as a secretary prior to the war (1939), arriving in Canada unable to speak English, she worked at whatever she could find and do - cooking and cleaning homes. As she learned to speak English she became a waitress extraordinaire and then graduated to a cashiers position at Shoppers Drug Mart at Garden City in Winnipeg where she worked for twenty years. Alice loved the theatre and music and was a member of the Polish Sokol Choir for twenty-five years. During that time the choir travelled to Poland a number of times. The choir also performed at the Winnipeg Folklorama Festival each year. Alice remarried in 1987 to Ernest Shalkowsky which started a new chapter in her life. For the first time since 1940, she had someone to take care of her. Alice and Ernie moved to Calgary in the summer of 1995. Her love of music continued and even though she had just turned seventy-nine, she discovered Karaoke and became a star. She always wowed the audience when she sang her favourite songs. The crowd went wild when she sang "How much is that Doggie in the Window" and "Que Sera Sera". That is how Alice lived her life that, "whatever will be will be". She faced each challenge and gave it her best. We played these songs for her as she was leaving us. As her daughter-in-law Kathy always said "she was the kindest, sweetest person she has ever known" and everyone agrees. She was very social. Everyone loved Alice and she will be missed greatly by everyone who knew her. Alice is survived by her daughter Jennifer Ferenc; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Kathy Schmidt; grandchildren, Cheryl, Darren, Dean and Ian; and great-grandson Keaton. She was predeceased by her son Cristian Schmidt; her first husband Waldamere Schmidt; and her second husband Ernest Shalkowsky. We love you Mom and miss you. You were a wonderful mother and grandmother and we are who we are because of everything you were in our lives. Forward condolences through, . In living memory of Alice Shalkowsky, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Shaw, Winnifred (Memoriam)

SHAW, Winnifred "Peggy" March 30, 1912 - May 11, 2011 It is with great sadness that the family of Peggy (Winnifred) Shaw (nee Perrin) announces the passing of Peggy Shaw of Edmonton, Alberta, formerly of Ottawa, Ontario. Peggy was born on March 30, 1912, in Little Britain, Ontario, the first of three daughters of Ella and Fred Perrin. She attended school in Little Britain, Oakwood, Lindsay, Moulton College and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The most formative experience of her life was the year she spent in Capetown, South Africa, where she and 11 other Canadian nurses worked at the new Groote Schuur Hospital. As Peggy wrote in her own published autobiography, The Stories of My Life, "I loved Africa. They say once you have known Africa, you always want to return. That is very true. I have dreamed of Africa for over fifty years now and in my dreams I am always at the beach on the Indian Ocean. The pace is slow, there is a feeling quite difficult to describe and the glorious scenery and beautiful weather just gets under your skin. I wish all young people could experience life in a different culture. It really broadens one's horizons and creates a feeling of kinship with others around the world. My year as a Canadian nurse in Capetown has provided a lifetime of memories for me and a love of - and belief in - the learning that comes from travel, a conviction which I have passed along to my children." Peggy met Geoffrey Shaw in 1939 in Trail, BC, and they were married August 23, 1941 in Oakwood, Ontario. Peggy returned to Africa with Geoff and their young son Roger in the 1940's where they spent a year in Mwadui, Tanganika, on the Williamson Diamond Mines. They returned to Canada to raise their family and Peggy remained in the Alta Vista area of Ottawa for over 50 years, making a bold and brave move west to Edmonton at the age of 90 in 2002. Beloved mother, sister and grandmother, Peggy is remembered with love and admiration by her three children: Roger (Janice), Kate (Andy Gunn), and Debbie (Gaston Ste-Marie) and her beloved sister Ruth Brennan of Brockville, Ontario. She leaves the priceless legacy of her enthusiasm for life and her caring for others to six grandchildren: Jason, Hana, Antoine, Olivia, David, Etienne and Kyle (2010, Andrea) and her two great-grandchildren, Jaclyn and Credence. She will also be greatly missed by her family of friends at the Riverbend Retirement Residence in Edmonton, as well as by a wide network of devoted friends and relatives across this country. The family is most grateful for the love and care of Peggy's dear friend and physician, Dr. Krish Dhunnoo, who brightened her days and years with his visits and support, and for the tender care and friendship of Vitelyn Castro and all the Riverbend staff. A Memorial Celebration of Peggy's Life will be held in Ottawa this summer and her final resting place will be Riverside Cemetery in Lindsay, Ontario. In lieu of floral tributes, donations may be made to the Alumni Endowment Fund, SickKids Foundation., 525 University Avenue, 14th Floor, Toronto, ON M5G 2L3. Titus, Geoffrey (Memoriam)

TITUS, Geoffrey Paul Age 38, of Saskatoon, SK passed away on May 9, 2011 at the Cross Cancer Clinic in Edmonton, AB after a courageous two-year battle with malignant melanoma. Geoff will be lovingly remembered by his mother Joanie Ross (Doug); father Gerry Titus (Sharon Sharpe-Titus); brother Jon Titus (Allison); sister Julie Titus (daughter Ella); and grandmothers: Margaret Olson, Joanne Titus and Mary Sharpe. He will also be deeply missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Geoff was born May 4, 1973 in Winnipeg, MB. While attending schools in Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Brandon, he began gathering the first of many life-long friends that naturally gravitated towards his gregarious nature. Friends' and familys' kids were held in his heart and treasured as if they were his own. He was the fun-loving, happy go-lucky "uncle" to many of the children in his life. Geoff's strong love of and fierce loyalty to friends and family further cemented these relationships into unbreakable bonds that will be forever cherished by those fortunate to have known him. Geoff is irreplaceable; friends and family will miss him dearly. Geoff was unflagging in encouraging those he knew to improve themselves, follow their dreams and not accept failure or limitations. His love of a great conversation, huge hugs, larger-than-life smiles and laughter will not be felt again. Those that had the honour to know him will forever remember him for and be inspired by his generous heart. Filled with boundless energy, Geoff found many ways to lead a full life. He was, at various times, a swimmer, football player, skateboarder, boxer, sailor, pizza chef and weight lifter. When he found something he loved, he took it on with 100% commitment. Early in his life, Geoff discovered a love of nature, the water and fishing that was further solidified during a short stint in the Canadian Naval Reserve and during numerous trips to visit his good friend Chad in BC. A life-long music lover, Geoff, in his early teens, could be heard unendingly swearing to his friends that rap music and its new, unknown acts such as Public Enemy, Ice-T and NWA were the future of music. Geoff spent his career working for his father and stepmother at ESP Salon Sales in Saskatoon. He started at the bottom, working his way from warehouse staff to salesman to general sales manager. Although based in Saskatoon, Geoff worked with members of the hairdressing community throughout western Canada. Through wisdom, friendship, leadership and mentoring, Geoff has left an indelible impression on the industry and the company he was committed to for seventeen years. Geoff's family would like to thank the hardworking and dedicated staff at the Cross Cancer Clinic for their compassion and professionalism in helping to take care of our Geoff.
